STUART DIES, published, Aug. 12, 1993 (Gene Strickland Stuart, 62, managing editor of National Geographic Society books and an expert on the Maya civilization of Central America, died of cancer Aug. 8 at her home in Silver Spring. Mrs. Stuart came to Washington and joined the staff of National Geographic in 1978 as a writer for World magazine for children. She wrote and edited books and wrote for the society’s filmstrips. She was born in Joanna, S.C., and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She had also studied art history and anthropology at the University of Georgia.)
